The tomato garden and Shed side level areas were made in Unity 6 for a project called Bee

Game, which was worked on between January and May of 2025. Bee Game is a 3D exploration-based game in which the player takes on the role of a bee after their hive has been destroyed and must gather other bees from around a backyard map to help and rebuild their hive. The player encounters different hazards, such as bug zappers and pesticide clouds while making their way around the backyard.

As a level designer, I concepted, designed, and implemented two out of three of the areas of the level, as well as implementing environmental art assets in the levels and refining and adjusting the level layouts and difficulty based on feedback and scope. The two areas of mine that ended up in the game were the tomato garden and the shed windowsill/side.

The tomato garden focuses on more on exploration in a larger and more open area with many different ways to go. With the player being able to fly, different heights of tomato plants were made with the tomatoes and leaves being at different levels that the player could land on, all while having hazards such as pesticide clouds and bug zappers at different heights as well. The main idea for this level was to have interesting exploration both vertically and horizontally.

The shed windowsill focuses more on a less open and more close quarters style of level, as the area is much smaller than the tomato gardens section. This level has many more hazards closer together, such as a much higher of number of bug zappers within a close proximity to each other that the player must avoid. The main point of making an area like this right after a much more open and much larger was to give some more variation in the feel of the levels to keep gameplay fresh and interesting between sections.

The initial concepts for the map layout and list of areas for Bee Game were initially much larger, with the first map concepts covering and entire suburban backyard, with sections such as a pond, a full shed interior, a grassy lawn, rocky paths, and even a patio and full garden. Because of the level ideas being very out of scope, much of it had to get cut down to only a few different areas.

Even after being cut down to a layout more resembling the final product, the map was still  bit too big and complicated to be refined, filled with art assets effectively, and refined through testing within a reasonable amount of time, forcing the map and level scope to be downsized a bit further into what is seen in the game now.

After several level area reworks, balance changes, and overall redesigns, the different levels of the game were shaped into work that would not only still provide variation and fun gameplay opportunities between sections, but would also be much more manageable for the environment artists and gameplay designers to work with as well without losing too much of the original idea.
